Cutting Edge® Grass Seed is a C3 cool season grass. Cutting Edge® Grass Seed is ideal for both the northern US and Canadian "Cool Season" zones, and for most parts of the mid-US “Transition” zone.
Use of Cutting Edge® Grass Seed in the southern US “Warm Season” zone should be carefully limited to professionally-managed temporary winter greening of dormant C-4 grasses.
A zone map and detailed planting instructions can be found on the manufacturer website at www.cuttingedgegrass.com, Planting & More Tab.

Cutting Edge® Grass Seed contains naturally occurring fungi that live symbiotically within the grass and help repel insects, improving overall stress tolerance. Cutting Edge® Grass Seed has improved disease resistance due to the combination of the endophyte and mycorrhizae, improving the overall health of the lawn.
Endophytic grasses improve a lawns resistance to grass blade feeding insects such as billbugs, chinch bugs, sod webworms, fall army-worms and argentine stem weevils. Biologically active alkaloids are found only in grasses with these highly beneficial fungi. The insecticidal effects produced by these compounds deter insect infestations, resulting in a population decline of these grass blade feeding insects. Alkaloid levels in the roots are low, however, and endophyte are thus not effective against root feeders such as white grubs.*
Lawns with endophyte tend to be comparatively vigorous, especially under conditions of minimal fertilization and irrigation (ideal conditions in a Cutting Edge® low maintenance lawn). Lawns with endophyte produce greater numbers of tillers and roots, making them more drought-tolerant, more competitive with weed species, able to recover more rapidly from injury and generally more persistent in the field. The higher performance is particularly notable under stressful conditions such as high temperature, as well as nutrient and water deficiency.*

Cutting Edge® Grass Seed was originally designed to grow in areas where other grass blends/mixes are not able to sustain growth. The amazingly hardy attributes of this revolutionary mix and the added mycorrhiza characteristics of Cutting Edge Organic Seed Coating™ makes it a superior choice for clay soil, rocky lawn areas, slopes, sandy soils, areas affected by salt, and lawns adjacent to asphalt and erosion areas.
Cutting Edge Organic Seed Coating™ is an OMRI® Listed natural organic grass seed coating. Cutting Edge Organic Seed Coating™ includes a Hydration and Mycorrhiza Package™. The seed coating will absorb and retain moisture during the germination period encapsulating moisture around the seedling. This typically results in faster germination while reducing the need for constant watering. Our seed coating also is enhanced with mycorrhizae, fungi that grow either inside of a plant’s roots or attach to the surface of a root. The fungi send their hyphae (like small roots) out into the surrounding soil, thus enhancing the grass’ ability to absorb nutrients and water and filter out soil toxins.
Cutting Edge® Grass seed is designed with exceptional slow growth and dwarf characteristics. The grass will grow to a dwarf height, with very little growth in high heat temperatures. In most cases you will only need to mow a Cutting Edge® lawn a few times in the spring and a few times in the fall though this varies depending on weather and geographical locations.
It is important to note that anyone who continues to water constantly and continues to fertilize constantly will experience increased mowing frequency as well as disease issues; simply stated, the ingredients to continually increase grass length and growth as well as disease issues have been provided in that case and should be avoided.
Reducing water frequency and reducing fertilizer dependence is how Cutting Edge® is revolutionizing the way consumers view lawn care today. Less water + less fertilizer = less mowing. Less rapid growth means fewer instances of disease and other issues.
The root system can grow as deep as 48 inches deep or beyond. Roots need to be trained to search for water. After germination, stress the roots gradually by reducing the water frequency each week and increasing the duration of watering, monitoring the visible health of the grass. As drought occurs and the water table drops beneath the soil, the roots will stress to seek and follow down to groundwater or deeper soil containing more moisture.
An established Cutting Edge® lawn with a deep root system will be more tolerant of extreme drought conditions. A need for watering the lawn would be entirely dependent on how far down the water table is in the ground or the amount of moisture contained and whether the root system has been established enough to reach it.
This can vary depending on the application. Initial germination for slice or hydro seed applications will be approximately within 3-5 days at the optimal soil temperature of 62 degrees Fahrenheit, complete germination of all specie will be approximately 20-28 days. Drop seed initial germination will be approximately 5-7 days, complete germination of all species will be approximately 20-28 days. Keep in mind the last species to germinate will be the Kentucky blue grass that will become a dominant visible species within the new lawn. Do not mow too soon or those seeds will be destroyed by the mower and will harm the mix.
The seeding rate is 4 lb. Per 1,000 square feet. Or, 1 lb. Per 250 square feet for a new lawn. For a complete seed rate chart go to www.cuttingedgegrass.com, Planting & More Tab, Seed Rate Chart.
Cutting Edge® introduced a new seed coating, Cutting Edge Organic Seed Coating™. The coating absorbs moisture, expanding the coating, keeping the seedling inside moist for a longer length of time than a grass seed without any means of encapsulating moisture. Most C3 cool season grass seeds must be watered frequently, 2-3 times a day for short periods, during germination but depending on temperatures and sun; the general rule is to keep it moist at all times until full germination. Cutting Edge® Grass Seed with Cutting Edge Organic Seed Coating™ would retain moisture longer, thus reducing your water frequency significantly during germination.
Although we always recommend starting with a new lawn, Cutting Edge® Grass Seed can eventually take over an existing cool season grass lawn after 3-4 seasons of over seeding (18-24 months).
